Doctoral Positions at IMPRS on Multiscale Bio-Systems in Germany, 2014

Applications are invited for about ten open doctoral positions at International Max Planck Research School on Multiscale Bio-Systems and its partner institutes in Potsdam and Berlin. Students accepted for the project will receive a research stipend for three years. Applications of Master’s and diploma students in physics, chemistry, biology or material sciences with a good knowledge of English will be encouraged. The deadline for such applications is January 31, 2014. Candidates applying after the deadline will be considered if there are still positions available

Study Subject (s): The research activities of IMPRS are focused on four core areas: molecular recognition of carbohydrates, interaction of biomolecules with light, directed intracellular processes, as well as directed shape changes of tissues.
Course Level: Positions are open for doctoral students at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces and its partner institutes in Potsdam and Berlin: University of Potsdam, Free University in Berlin, Humboldt University in Berlin and the Fraunhofer Institute of Biomedical Engineering.
Scholarship Provider: International Max Planck Research School on Multiscale Bio-Systems
Scholarship can be taken at: Germany

Eligibility: Applications of Master’s and diploma students in physics, chemistry, biology or material sciences with a good knowledge of English will be encouraged.

Scholarship Open for International Students: German students can apply for these positions.

Scholarship Description: The IMPRS on Multiscale Bio-Systems addresses the fundamental levels of biosystems as provided by macromolecules in aqueous solutions, molecular recognition between these building blocks, free energy transduction by molecular machines as well as structure formation and transport in cells and tissues. Each doctoral student at the IMPRS on Multiscale Bio-Systems is supervised by at least two faculty members of the school. In addition to that, each student chooses an additional person (the mentor) from the rest of the faculty. The mentor is typically not directly involved in the research project. The supervisors and the mentor compose the thesis committee of the doctoral student. They will meet on a regular basis together with the student and discuss the progress as well as give suggestions for courses and activities that will complement the training of the student.

Number of award(s): There are currently about ten open positions.

Duration of award(s): These positions will be available for up to three years.

What does it cover? Students accepted for the project will then receive a research stipend for three years.

Selection Criteria: There will be a first selection based on the documents in the application to create a short list of applicants, who will be contacted for an interview, if necessary. Selection will be made taking both the general qualifications of the candidate and the specific requirements of the project into account.

How to Apply: Candidates, who wish to apply for the IMPRS on Multiscale Bio-Systems, need to fill in a web form. In the online application form (see bottom of the page), you will have to upload one single document in pdf-format containing
-Curriculum Vitae (CV)
-List of courses taken at the University with grades
-A motivation letter
It is convenient to prepare the document before starting the application form. Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered. Each candidate is expected to select one or more research projects and indicate them in the application form during the application process. The reason for the choice of the project(s) must be explained in the motivation letter.

Scholarship Application Deadline: The deadline for such application is January 31, 2014. Candidates applying after the deadline will be considered if there are still positions available.
