The curricular programs of the University reflect a close working links with local and international Universities, businesses and industries so that its standards will be relevant to the socio-economic needs of the country.

Through the years of its development, TNU has trained thousands of high quality professionals in response to the manpower needs of the country. In addition, the University has provided support in training the faculty and staff of various colleges and universities in the region as follows: Tay Bac University, Hung Vuong University, Bac Giang University of Agriculture and Forestry, Bac Can College, Son La College, among others.

The training quality in the entire university has been improving considerably. Based on records, 30% of students obtained good and excellent ratings (this figure was only 15% in 2005). The system of tertiary education assessment has been formed in the university head office and to its member units, faculties and divisions. Up to now, 100% of the training institution has completed the self-assessment based on MOET’s criteria and standards.

In its desire to be recognized as a research Centre, TNU has implemented 2 programs: Renovating Research Management and Cooperating with regional provinces in technology transfer. During the period from 2006 to 2012, TNU has conducted 06 state-level science projects, 22 key ministry-level projects, 409 ministry-level projects, almost 2000 state-level projects, over 3000 university-level projects, and published about 2000 articles in Vietnam and abroad, hosted approximately 20 National and regional conferences. Following the motto “Associating scientific research with academic affairs, to meet the needs for local socio-economic development”, at present, TNU has entered into many cooperative agreements on science and technology with almost all provinces within the region, such as Bac Giang, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Can, Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Hoa Binh, Bac Ninh,  Quang Ninh, and Vinh Phuc.

One of the breakthroughs of TNU’s new advancement is its international cooperation with diverse activities, such as: establishing partnership training institutions, adopting foreign advanced curricula, students and teacher exchanges, and implementing international projects. At present, TNU has entered into and signed agreements with over 120 partners in various fields with many countries, training institutions and research organizations. In particular, in recent years, TNU has collaborated with reputable universities such as University of Hawaii, University of California, University of Buffalo in the United States, University of Manchester, University of De Montfort, University of Reading – United Kingdom, Paris University – France, Pingtung University – Taiwan, Honghe Academy, Yunnan University – China.

For the improvement of staff’s professional career, language and computer skills, TNU has cooperated with the British Council and Cambridge representative office in Vietnam in establishing an office at TNU in 2012. In this context, the university was entrusted by the MOET and the Management Board for the National Project of Language improvement as one of 5 centers to handle the project.

For nearly 20 years of development, TNU has been experiencing growth in qualitative and quantitative aspects in instruction, scientific research and technology transfer, production, and management, among others. Hence, as it continues its journey towards the future, it displays with dynamism its commitment toward the pursuit of excellence in this noble undertaking.

The university’s development strategy till 2020 is to develop all the resources to make TNU become a prime university, and high-quality training and research center of the Northern midland and mountainous area. This direction will contribute to building and defending the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, successfully achieving the project in making TNU to become the prime university and the regional academic training center towards 2020, as approved by the Ministry of Education and Training.

With this in mind, Thai Nguyen University envisions to become a world class University  within Vietnam and the Southeast Asia in providing higher education in the fields of agriculture and forestry, teacher education, technology, economics, business administration, medicine and pharmacy, information and communication technology, foreign languages, among others.
