Location, history and development
Thai Nguyen University is nestled in the picturesque city of Thai Nguyen of the Northern Midland and Mountainous region – a strategic region for socio-economic, national security, public security, foreign affairs and environmental ecosystem development of the country with potentials and advantages for the advancement of agriculture, forestry, hydroelectric power, mining, tourism industry, and economy.
The Northern part of the country, which includes Red River Delta and Northern Midland and Mountainous Region, is a place where many ethnic minorities live in harmony for a long tradition; said ethnic minorities are accounted for 54.68% - the highest rate in the country with their own cultural identities. This region is noted for its historical, cultural, revolutionary origins and marvelous scenes with a population of approximately 30 million people.
Thai Nguyen is the melting pot of diverse cultures of the Northern Mountain’s ethnic minorities, a focal point of cultural and educational activities of the vast northern mountains. With a geographic location as the center of politics and economy of the Northern mountainous region east midlands, Thai Nguyen is also the gateway of socio- economic exchange between the Northern Midlands and Mountainous and the Red River Delta.
Considering that Thai Nguyen University is strategically located in Thai Nguyen Province, it appropriately befits to become the center of higher education in the northern mountainous region.
HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT
Thai Nguyen University (TNU) is public university was established on April 4th 1994 by reorganizing and merging local universities and school in Thai Nguyen Province, namely:
+ Thai Nguyen University of Electrical Engineering (established in 1964, now TNU University of Technology);
+ Viet Bac University of Education (established in 1966, now TNU University of Education);
+ Bac Thai University of Agriculture III (established in 1970, now TNU University of Agriculture and Forestry);
+ Bac Thai University of Medicine (established in 1968, now TNU University of Medicine and Pharmacy)
+ Viet Bac Vocational School of Electrical Engineering (established in 1974, now TNU College of Economics and Techniques)
At present, Thai Nguyen University has eleven (11) member-universities/college/schools as follows:
- TNU University of Technology
- TNU University of Education
- TNU University of Agriculture and Forestry
- TNU University of Medicine and Pharmacy
- TNU University of Economics and Business Administration (established in 2004)
- TNU University of Sciences (established in 2008)
- TNU University of Information and Communication Technology (established in 2011)
- TNU College of Economics and Techniques (established in 2005)
- TNU School of Foreign Languages (established in 2008)
- TNU International School (established in 2011)
- Thai Nguyen University’s Branch in Lao Cai (established in 2016).
Currently, TNU has 27 administrative units with 4,406 civil servants with 2,808 teaching staff, including 115 professors and associate professors, 513 PhD. and 2,104 master's degree holders. In addition, TNU sent approximately 1,000 faculty staff to study postgraduate level all over the world.
TNU was mandated to provide education, training, research, and technology transfer in the fields of teacher education, agriculture and forestry, medicine and pharmacy, science, economics and business administration, information and communications technology, industrial technology, foreign languages, and vocational trainings and related fields towards socio-economic and cultural development for the northern mountainous area of Vietnam.
TNU is committed to generate innovation and technologies and to manage science for socio-economic development of the area, to participate in technological transferring and extension for socio-economic development of the area, to participate in setting up policies for sustainable development of the area and country, and to be a center to generate, store, and provide information for development and management.
