THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY: 20 Years of Growth and Development

The 2014 marks a milestone in the history of Thai Nguyen University, the 20th year of its establishment. It is an important occasion for the whole TNU faculty/staff and lecturers, giving a throwback of its growth and development. The university constituents are honored for what TNU has achieved and gained in the past twenty (20) years, thus, confirming the important role of TNU as a regional university in all aspects.

The 2014 marks a milestone in the history of Thai Nguyen University,  the 20th  year of its establishment. It is an important occasion for the whole TNU faculty/staff and lecturers, giving a throwback of its growth and development. The university constituents are honored for what TNU has achieved and gained in the past twenty (20) years, thus, confirming the important role of TNU as a regional university in all aspects.

On the basis of training units, TNU had 05 training units only. Nowadays, TNU has increased to more than 10 training units and 11 research institutions in support for training activities. The number and quality of staff/faculty is constantly increasing and of high caliber. The number of Professor and Associate Professor has increased from 08 people at the beginning to 115 people; the number of Doctorate degree holders has increased from 40 people to over 400 people, accounting to over 80 percent of the total number of Professors/Associate Professors, Doctorate degree holders in the North mountainous region of Vietnam. With regards to its curricular offerings,  TNU has 153 undergraduate majors, 43 graduate majors and 24 doctoral majors with more than 90 thousand students. In order to continuously improve the quality of training, TNU has issued a proposal for lecturer’s standardization whereby lecturers must obtain at least a Master’s degree, a B1 level for foreign language (based on Common European Framework Reference) and an IC3 level for Informatics.

In terms of infrastructure development, TNU focuses on planning and constructing modern and synchronized infrastructure. Currently, the new training facilities of TNU are well established to support teaching, learning and amusement for students. Furthermore, TNU received special support from the Government to invest in construction of large buildings as modern sports center, 30 five-story buildings for student dormitory. With this infrastructure development, a  number of students living in dorms has increased from 20 percent to 40 percent. Besides, TNU also focused on capital outlay in applied sciences and technology with modern equipment, especially in key areas such as biotechnology, medicine, and forestry, from this TNU was able to produce highly qualified scientists, developed research projects that can practically be utilized  in real life situation.

Regarding the international cooperation, TNU has developed partnerships with over fifty (50) universities and research centers worldwide. For domestic partners, TNU also shared trainings, resources and support for developing training facility such as Hung Vuong University, University of Bac Giang Agriculture and Forestry, Tan Trao University, Fansipan University, etc., assist other provinces in the region in training highly qualified staff.

Those are evident that in 20 years of development, TNU has achieved a very significant achievement as a regional university, a training center, scientific research, technology transfer, and multidisciplinary fields in the northern  midland and mountainous area of Vietnam.

In fact, the year 2014 is momentous year of development because TNU organized action plans to implement the Resolution 29 - NQ -TW of the Party Central Committee XI of radical and comprehensive renovations on  education and training.

TNU considers this mission to be one of the major goals and sets high responsibility role through reconstruction of action program concerning all issues, including organizational structures, team development, curriculum, textbooks, teaching contents, testing/exams, assessments, scientific research, international cooperation, student management, financial management and so on. The contents were reviewed and  innovated based on the motto: TNU’s Goals towards Standardization, Modernization, Democratization, Socialization, and Internationalization.

TNU has established 04 subcommittees to develop programs specified to each contents. Thus, TNU considers the innovation as radical and comprehensive in education and training, which requires high intellectual investment, quality human resources and huge financial investment, as well as the consensus of the whole university systems.

With those in mind, the Year 2014 will serve as an avenue of important milestone marking TNU’s growth and development now and in the years to come.
